Oyster shells insulate a raised house; Lala Wang arranges clam shells into a village wall garden.

That dense pale stuff covering Chenglong's raised house is oyster shell. Actual oyster shell. It hangs on the walls like armour against Yunlin's summer sun; downstairs is open, and the stairs climb up the outside. The building is called 蝦董ㄟ躼腳厝. Faced with sinking land and floodwater, it makes a fairly emphatic architectural suggestion: put the bloody house up in the air.

Chenglong sits on the coast in Kouhu, Yunlin. Subsidence and seawater flooding turned farmland into wetlands. Life carried on: people still farm fish, visiting birds seem pleased with the location, and artists have moved into the picture too. The environmental education foundation 觀樹教育基金會 built and manages the raised house. Inside, the Chenglong Wetlands Story House has community guides to tell you how their village acquired this very unexpected plot twist.

Walk into the village's public spaces and find Lala Wang's 落地生花, made in 2025. Clam shells become a drawing tool: flowers, leaves and curling stems spread across old concrete, their pale lines swerving around dark round holes. Get close and consider how many little shells somebody had to place. The work stays here to weather with the village. Admire it with your eyes; please don't pick off a souvenir. This is art, not the free garnish counter for your clam soup.

For a visit inside the raised house as well as a village walk, pin Saturday afternoon to the calendar. The Story House opens 14:30–18:00, with free community tours at 16:00 and 17:00. The market runs 14:30–17:30, selling local farm and seafood products. Empty a little space in your bag before leaving home. These are goods you can legitimately remove with New Taiwan dollars.
