Follow a family photograph into Taiwanese puppetry, political repression and the identities people kept from one another.

In the photograph, a woman holds a baby beside a puppet booth. The man next to her holds two glove-puppet tigers. A-Wen finds the picture among his adoptive father’s belongings and sets off across Taiwan looking for the man who might be his biological father.

The Party Theater Group’s Father Mother combines live actors and puppets: six performers carry 36 roles. Directed by Su Yang-cheng and written by Chiu An-chen, its family history reaches from Japanese rule into the White Terror, the Kuomintang’s political repression, and questions of sexual identity across generations.

Both performances start at 14:30, October 24 and 25, in Weiwuying’s Playhouse. Mandarin and Taigi dialogue has Chinese and English surtitles. The play runs about two hours without an interval; recommended for ages 12 and up. Standard prices are NT$800, 1,000 and 1,200. Choose a session and seats on OPENTIX.

From Weiwuying MRT on the Orange Line, allow five minutes for the roughly 200-metre walk to the arts centre, then time to find the Playhouse and your seat. Aim to arrive at 14:00. Latecomers follow staff directions for entry.
