You can arrange a visit without taking guitar lessons. The music also travels to a barbershop.

A wooden speaker holds its ground beside the table, guitar cases lean against the wall, and the thermos sits exactly one good stretch away. This room at Huiming Art Center has an unmistakable look: you came all this way, sit down and have a chat. The music will find its way in.

You needn't buy ten lessons to cross the threshold. We asked: even if your fingertips have never grown a callus, ordinary visitors are welcome to book a look around and a chat. There is no security system that releases the dogs when you fail to play an F chord.

Down a lane off Hualien's Zhonghe Street, Huiming teaches guitar, records music and offers makeup lessons. The center describes handmade speakers downstairs and in its upstairs guitar classroom and recording room. Look at that chair pulled up beside the speaker, the patterned rug and the cup apparently waiting for a refill. Book a time and ask to settle in for a listen.

Sometimes the music goes out for takeaway. On September 19, 2026, Huiming joins Wu Ge Barbershop on Yanping Street for a music salon. The host opens with an hour of guitar and singing, then hands the microphone to the room. Bring your instrument to play, or your drink to listen. Beer is welcome; so are soda and cold-brew tea for the well-behaved contingent. Grant the thousands of troublesome hairs on your head a reprieve. The haircut can wait.

Huiming Art Center is at No. 12, Lane 214, Zhonghe Street, Hualien City. Message @stevedorisartcenter or call 0911-620999 to book. Listed hours are Tuesday–Friday 14:00–21:00, Saturday 11:00–21:00 and Sunday 14:00–18:00; Monday closed. Book first: these aren't convenience-store hours promising a ding-dong whenever you push the door. From Hualien Station, it's roughly 2.9 kilometres and 11 minutes by taxi.

September 19: listen at the barbershop

Doors open at 18:30; music runs 19:00–21:00 at Wu Ge Barbershop, No. 40, Yanping Street, Hualien City. Bring a drink for entry; tea and soda are welcome. Highlight this bit: the event is not at the Zhonghe Street art center. Don't spend the evening serenading the wrong lane. See the organizer's current post, linked below, for the programme and contact route.
