Stay with the painting long enough for an ordinary dinner to become peculiar.

Oysters on the left, tempura on the right. Dinner looks plausible until the green pacifier turns upside down in front of a pink-capped figure. A small bear floats above it, carrying a cherry. Nobody seems in a hurry to explain the order.

In Takuya Kitashima’s acrylic painting Sometimes Turning Upside Down, the grey-green surface gives food, toys and the tired-eyed diner the same soft texture. You recognise each object; their proximity makes the table strange.

The Japanese painter’s DREAMS exhibition runs October 23–November 7 at Uartcube Lab, a Taipei cafe-gallery, curated by Uspace Gallery.

Visit Tuesday–Saturday, 10:00–18:00; closed Sunday and Monday. The address is 89-1, Xinyi Road Section 4. From Daan MRT, walk east along Xinyi Road; allow seven minutes for roughly 400 metres.
