Roots, felted faces and vintage furniture in Yancheng

Two Kaohsiung exhibitions meet branches with felted bodies beside Yanchengpu MRT. Liu’s show ends November 29; Lin’s ends November 1.

Look at branching forms and felted faces among vintage furniture in Yancheng.

A brown ring branches out across a dark square on the wall. Beneath it sit a wooden table, a patterned chair and small objects. In 55möbler’s photograph, Liu Hsiang-Hua’s work shares a room with furniture you might imagine living with. Let your eye travel from the empty centre to the tips of those branches.

Two ways of growing

Liu’s 沒有扎根的樹 exhibition runs until November 29. His mixed-media practice draws on relationships between people and nature, and the connections he finds between physics, colour, texture and feeling.

Until November 1, the venue also hosts Jie-Yu Lin / Furao’s The Domain of Silent Surge. Her poster shows closed-eyed pink faces enclosed by green fibre, their bodies stretching into stems and leaves. Wool and other fibres interweave and felt into these shapes. Lin describes the exhibition through her return to making in Kaohsiung, moving from the sea towards land and roots.

Set aside half an hour to look, then compare the detail each of you kept returning to. The venue is beside Yanchengpu MRT Exit 4; stop by after Pier-2, or before dinner. Furao’s show closes four weeks before Liu’s, so come by November 1 to see both.

The Domain of Silent Surge poster: two felted plant-like figures stand on wooden bases, their pale pink closed-eyed faces wrapped in grey-green and bright green fibre, with a turquoise leaf.
