Touch the glaze: Light Tube at C-LAB

Hsiangfu Chen's porcelain tubes light up when a finger meets the conductive glaze; at C-LAB's Along the Path of Light until October 11.

Warmly lit ceramic tubes hang at different heights against a brown wall; narrow dark glaze marks run along several surfaces.

The glaze is the switch: work 08 on C7's first floor, free, six minutes from Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT.

Hsiangfu Chen's ceramic tubes hang at different heights, their warm light catching narrow strips of glaze. The photograph makes me want to look along each surface before reaching for it.

Light Tube (2025) is touch-responsive: a finger on the conductive glaze lights the LED inside. Chen developed it at the European Ceramic Work Centre in the Netherlands through repeated electrical tests and firings of thin-walled porcelain. I like that the glaze is the interface.

The work appears in Along the Path of Light, C-LAB's exhibition of work developed during overseas residencies. The show closes Sunday, October 11, 2026. Admission is free, 11:00–18:00. Find Light Tube at number 08 on C7 Art Space III's first floor. The wider show also uses C7's outdoor Container Unit and C5 Art Space I's Gray Box. The organizer's map and bilingual handbook help you find the works across the site.
