Start with an exhibition built from green produce crates and look at the design of Taiwan’s markets.

Green produce crates climb the walls of the exhibition preview. Stacked beneath pale boards, they become benches; stacked higher, they become counters.

This is A7, 《好市有戲》, at the Taiwan Design Expo in Taoyuan. Curated by Huang Ming-chang of studio ordinary, with a space designed by UMEADOW, it brings together markets and shopping districts from across Taiwan. Taipei's Shuiyuan Market and Taichung's Second Market join Taoyuan's Zhongyuan shopping district and Kaohsiung's Qishan. The exhibition follows the people who run, use and redesign these places. If you travel through Taiwan by following your appetite, here is a chance to look at the spaces around your lunch.

The Expo runs September 24–October 11. Its programme sprawls across Qingpu, Zhongli and satellite venues; for a first visit, give one building an afternoon. A7 is inside Messe Taoyuan, the main exhibition venue in Qingpu. You can follow your curiosity into the other exhibitions there without spending the afternoon transferring between districts.

From the train to the exhibition

From Taoyuan HSR station, transfer to the Airport MRT at A18 and ride one stop to A19 Taoyuan Sports Park. Allow ten minutes for the roughly 600-metre walk to Messe Taoyuan, at 99, Linghang North Road Section 1. The walking link below has both the station and venue pinned.

Admission to the main exhibitions is free. Opening hours are 10:00–18:00 Monday–Thursday, extended to 20:00 Friday–Sunday and public holidays. The final day, October 11, closes at 18:00. Leave suitcases at your accommodation: large luggage cannot enter the exhibition.

If you extend the outing to the satellite programme, Taoyuan Children's Art Center and Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center charge admission. Keep Zhongli's Chung Yuan Cultural and Creative Park for a separate outing if you want time to linger over the work in Qingpu.
