A song after a day's work

The exhibition poster puts two white-haired grandmas inside a round yueqin. One has broken into a smile; the other looks off to the side. There's a bird overhead, and the flowers are having a very good day. The women it asks you to get to know have had plenty of days that weren't nearly so easy.

《日花微微仔爍 — 半島女伶聲未歇》 follows the folk-song lives of women from the Hengchun Peninsula. Chen Ying (陳英) and Chang Jih-kuei (張日貴), born in the same year, put down roots in Hengchun and Manzhou respectively. Both did hard manual work to support their families. Singing first gave them a way through life's bitter and sweet patches; later, it brought them to new stages. Their stories meet those of Lin Chiu-Yueh (林秋月), Huang Chueh-Yin (黃卻銀) and other women of the peninsula. What stays in a voice after a day's work? Especially before anyone tells its owner, “That should go in a museum.”

The Folksongs Museum at Hengchun Cultural Center has given these voices a large new home. Its pale curved building rises beside the old town, with outdoor stairs spreading along one side. Inside are folk-song exhibitions, a sound museum and a library. Honestly, the building alone looks impatient to squeeze into your phone's holiday album.

The show runs September 1, 2026–March 31, 2027, with free entry. Fridays and Saturdays stretch to nine at night: spend the afternoon eating your way through Hengchun, then walk over with a full stomach. Tuesday–Thursday and Sunday are 09:00–18:00; Monday closed. Take the 9189 Kenting Express from Zuoying HSR to Hengchun Transfer Station, then allow fifteen minutes for a stroll, as the museum recommends, to No. 6, Lane 1, Dongmen Road.
