A fire hydrant changes careers

A little red hydrant puts the design of Kinmen's bottles in view.
The side outlets, the heavy cap, that air of public responsibility: the little red hydrant has kept them all. It's just carrying kaoliang now. Please don't attach a hose.
The factory's November 2025 advertisement is taking no chances with the joke. Flames, splashing water, yellow emergency tape, and 消火氣: extinguish the heat, or cool your temper. This bottle has a lot on its desk today.
There really is a firefighter behind the career change. In a March 2026 Formosa News report, factory manager Lin Wei-shang connects his former firefighting work with the hydrant design. The factory's own record puts the bottle's introduction in November 2025, when it also went to the Taipei International Travel Fair.
The factory was established in 1963, with local kaolin deposits giving Kinmen a reason to fire ceramics. Tableware, art ceramics and bottles for the island's kaoliang industry all come out of this kiln. Look at this one: the rounded side caps and broad foot tell you who it is before you've read a word.
Visit the factory shop in Jinhu to see what it makes. There are hands-on ceramics sessions too; call ahead about the programme and booking. Leave some time for the containers. What's inside them usually gets quite enough attention.
