A light inside the tulip

Nemosyne Wang's pink petals fill the picture, but a little green at the centre steals your eye. Her free solo show opens September 19 in the lanes beside Xihu MRT.

Look into Nemosyne Wang's tulip in an old-house gallery near Xihu MRT.

Pink covers almost the whole painting, yet your eye heads straight for that little patch of green. In Nemosyne Wang's Love and Tranquillity (《無我》), pale pointed shapes gather at the centre; yellow and green spread out into the pink petals, as if someone has secretly switched on a light inside the tulip. Look closer and fine flecks and brush marks appear in the colour.

This is the view straight down into an open tulip. In the artist's statement shared by FOGARTS, Wang says she wasn't deliberately looking for anything, but found a sense of steadiness at the flower's centre. There is no vase or tabletop to pull your eye back out. Even the corners are pink.

Born in Hsinchu in 1991 and now living and working in Taichung, Wang works across painting, ceramics and writing. Her solo show just being here (《只是在這裡》) opens this Saturday, September 19, at FOGARTS in Neihu. The gallery occupies an old house in the lanes beside Xihu MRT.
