Nuit Blanche: supermarket music, human voices, a market after dark

On October 31, dance by Yuanshan’s old carousel, catch a score passed from hand to hand, then follow a performance into Qingguang Market. Dinner fits between.

Three sound works give this free festival an evening route you can actually follow.

PX Mart’s supermarket music is getting an unlikely dance floor. Chung-Han Yao’s Midnight Music Box remixes it into electronic tracks beside the old Yuanshan carousel. Sensors read people’s movement and change the music and lights. Your shopping soundtrack has acquired a nightlife.

Further south, Chi-Wei Lin’s Tape Music makes a score travel through people. Participants pass a long woven strip, reading and sounding its instructions in turn. Without a conductor or shared clock, delays, misreadings and the group’s adjustments produce the structure. The October 31 programme includes a 19:00–19:20 session at Tatung University’s Shan-Chih Hall.

At Qingguang Market, Wei-Yi Chen, Ssu-Han Wang and Qi-Fang Huang begin Searching for Nagashi with a game: look for a song, a sound, a memory. The performance moves through the market’s people and sounds, asking what remains when a place changes. Its short sessions start at 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00.

Start around 17:00 at Yuanshan MRT for the carousel, leave the park around 18:15, and reach Shan-Chih Hall before 19:00. Then head to Qingguang. Catch the 20:00 market performance and eat afterwards on neighbouring Shuangcheng Street; or have dinner first and choose 21:00. This is our suggested order within the larger festival.

People seated in close circles pass and read a long pale strip; a surrounding crowd holds candles.
