Two exhibitions in one warehouse visit: Untethered in Studio 5 and Ecologies of Making in the main hall.
An orange jointed figure raises a hand. A grey figure overlaps it, with rows of elaborately dressed puppets behind. Pale strings cross the body and continue beyond the poster’s edge. The controlling hand stays out of sight.
Phyu Sin Thant began this series by looking at weathered advertisements peeling from sheet-metal walls. Those layers held traces of social, economic, educational and political histories. Drawing on her life as a Myanmar artist, she sets traditional imagery and everyday life behind people pulled by political, economic and religious forces.
Mekong Cultural Hub is supporting the Monywa artist’s three-month residency in Hsinchu. Untethered runs November 7–19 in Studio 5. In the same art village, Elena Redaelli’s Ecologies of Making continues in the main exhibition hall through November 29.
