A cat leaves its weight in the paper

SuWei makes pawprints fade and cat drool catch the light. His new picture book's drawings and printing experiments go on show at Tongli in Taipei from October 31.

An enormous round black cat lies upside down over a blue grid; the white strip below gives the October 31–November 22 exhibition dates and Chinese book title.

Watch a book use the pressure of a pawprint to tell a story about parting.

The pawprints grow shallower. Across layers of white paper, a small dent gradually loses its depth. In SuWei's《貓咪的123456件禮物》, the book carries some of the cat's disappearing weight.

The story began while SuWei was caring for a chronically ill cat. He imagined what the cat would leave behind. The cat prepares six gifts and tells the story. It gets the last word. Its tone can be cool, funny or unexpectedly tender.

Gloss varnish catches the light like a trace of drool. Black ink makes fur darker than the black paper beneath it. Another cat hides inside a folded leaf; the binding asks you to peer in from the side. Four papers and four printing techniques give this farewell a physical form.

At Tongli, drawings, paper trials, print proofs and draft books let you follow those decisions. The tests make a good reason to see the book beyond a flat image on a phone.

A slow stop near Guting

Give this small shop an unhurried hour for the exhibition and its other shelves. The show opens October 31 and runs through November 22, 2026. Ordinary viewing is free. On November 8, SuWei gives a separate, free talk from 14:30 to 16:00; register through ACCUPASS. Browsing pauses during talks and workshops.

Three overlapping white sheets carry paw-shaped depressions of decreasing depth. The original Chinese design note remains above and below the photograph.

A pale glossy oval catches the light between blue grid lines on cream paper; Chinese headings identify the spot-varnish technique and cat drool.
