The neighbour’s wall became a family picture book

At Tanaka Bookshop in rural Xuejia, Rumi Yoshida’s painted walls bring a family’s children, grandchildren, flowers and birds into the lane.

Visitors and children pose beside a low painted wall at sunset in Xuejia. Blue water, people, flowers and birds run along the wall, with trees and a temple behind.

Look at the painted family, then browse the books when the shop is open.

Blue water runs along the low wall. Children stand among flowers and birds; beyond it are trees, a temple and the evening sky. Rumi Yoshida has been painting at Tanaka Bookshop and the house opposite, bringing the picture book out into a lane in northern Tainan.

In Lu Ping-shan’s October 16 report for Chung Hwa Daily, neighbour Chuang Yao-ming explains the family details in his wall: five daughters, four spoonbills for grandsons and four bougainvillea leaves for granddaughters. A passer-by gets a painted landscape; the family gets to recognise itself.

The bookshop is at Meifeng No. 7 in Xuejia, well north of Tainan’s city centre. From Xinying railway station, allow about 30 minutes by car or taxi. The walls face the lane, so you can look when the shop is closed. Keep the neighbouring home’s doorway clear.

For books as well as paintings, visit Thursday–Sunday. Thursday starts later, at 11:30.
