Why this order

Corrugated roofing becomes jewellery. Clay behaves like weathered rock. A paraglider scatters handmade paper into the sky. The steel-sculpture festival’s SUPER LOCAL trail takes you out through Yancheng’s independent art spaces; this opening-weekend loop connects all seven with a short walk and time to stop for food.

Our suggested afternoon

Start at the history museum around noon, then reach Orogeny after 13:00. Continue to YoYo and Sin Pin Pier; pause for something to eat around the market before its two window galleries. Finish at A Jian by about 17:00. The full loop, including the station, is about 1.8 km: roughly 30 minutes walking, plus all the time you choose to spend looking.

Take Kaohsiung MRT’s Orange Line to Yanchengpu (O2). The history museum is about 480 m on foot, about seven minutes. The final stop, A Jian, is about 110 m or two minutes from the station. Each stop below has its own exact map pin and directions.

  1. Stop 1

Noon · begin with the harbour’s working history

The former city hall now houses Kaohsiung Museum of History. Its permanent exhibition follows water, harbour building and industrialisation, with the people who made the port city work. Give yourself about 45 minutes before the small spaces open. Room 201 is closed during this weekend; use the other galleries.

  2. Stop 2

13:00 · clay with geological ambitions

Walk — From the previous stop: about 430 m, 7 minutes on foot.

At Orogeny, 林明玉’s Endlessly Evolving joins clays from different geological environments into bands and weathered surfaces. Look for the bands of colour and the shift from fine clay to coarse quartz sand. Orogeny moved here from Sanmin in 2025. This show runs October 1–November 15.

A rounded ceramic form has a dark opening, bands of clay and a rough, pale, pitted surface.

YoYo · rooftop material, worn close

Walk — From the previous stop: about 260 m, 5 minutes on foot.

Amal Chao / 趙永惠 takes the corrugated metal of Taiwan’s roof extensions and repairs into jewellery. In Where Reassurance Goes, repeated sawing, folding and linking carry the memory of the hand. The small studio sits down a lane off Daren Road. October 23–November 22; its separate opening reception is November 1 at 14:00.

  4. Stop 4

Sin Pin Pier · an artist-run industrial memory

Walk — From the previous stop: about 70 m, 2 minutes on foot.

The artist-run space moved to 146 Daren Road in March 2026. Its steel-festival programme returns to the 2003 exhibition 黑手打狗—工業高雄 through documents and Lung-Mu Hung / 洪龍木’s metal works. The programme also includes 林昱達’s ...Metabolizing..., an installation grounded in the artist’s experience of atopic dermatitis and resistance to ableism.

Three metal sculptures assembled from rods, gears, springs and bicycle chains stand against a yellow wall.

    Market window · a mother’s slowing rhythm

Walk — From the previous stop: about 150 m, 3 minutes on foot.

At the unmanned #FFFFFF window gallery, 許芸瑄’s sempre sempre begins with a childhood memory: her mother’s hand slowing as she patted her to sleep. Hands, shadows, a zipper and a compass move at different speeds across its looping images. Look from the street at 215 Xinle Street. This show ends October 29.

Moving images of hands are projected onto freestanding white surfaces in a dim room, with another image playing on a wall-mounted screen.

  6. Stop 6

A one-ping room · reading the damp edges of two cities

Walk — From the previous stop: about 40 m, 1 minute on foot.

A ping is about 3.3 square metres. This tiny room works with one book or textual idea each month. Blank: South & North brings 馬雨辰, 張之瑉 and 王郁敦’s poems, photographs, paintings and sound to the humid edges of Yancheng and Taipei’s Wenshan. It is at 213-15 Xinle Street, about 40 m from #FFFFFF. The current show ends October 30.

A partly shadowed doorway has textured glass covered with interlocking pink, yellow, green and pale-blue shapes.

  7. Stop 7

A Jian · paper that carries another life

Walk — From the previous stop: about 240 m, 4 minutes on foot.

Sujin Moon makes paper from plants gathered in places of temporary residence. In Driftroot, paper can age, collapse and change again. The programme’s airborne image comes from a performance with paragliders scattering seed-bearing handmade paper. See the work in A Jian’s first- and second-floor rooms, then walk back to the MRT. October 23–November 23; Friday–Monday opening.

A paraglider floats over a river valley while small pieces of paper scatter through the air behind the performer.
