Wujie, Yilan · Cultural park in a former paper mill

Chung Hsing Cultural and Creative Park

The sheds and chimney of the 1935 Chung Hsing Paper Mill now give land art room to spread out.

Under night lighting, densely woven bamboo fills a broken opening in an old factory wall, curling on the right into a round tunnel a visitor can walk into.

Tall walls, factory sheds and a chimney preserve the scale of Yilan's paper industry.

The park was Chung Hsing Paper Mill, built in 1935 and once the largest paper works in Taiwan. After production stopped, Yilan County Government rebuilt the site as a cultural park without smoothing the ruins away: the broken openings, rust, and tall concrete walls are still there.

That scale gave the 2026 Art Maker Festival, The Eco-Museum of Books, room for bamboo, paper, dyed cloth and projected text among the sheds and lawns. The exhibition ended on September 6, 2026; this page retains its work photographs.

Through a circular bamboo opening, a line of lit stone-like forms stands on night grass before the concrete wall of the former paper mill, with projected text on it.

At night, two pale masses built from stacked layers of paper push out of an old concrete wall, their edges picked out by floor-mounted lights.

Bamboo lit from within glows gold, throwing a lattice of shadows across the pitted concrete wall beside it.
