A dusk route through the old paper mill

Elena Redaelli's The Years of Paper begins against a concrete wall. Pale scraps gather into rough masses, their cut and torn edges still visible. The wall belongs to the former paper mill, where pulp, water and labour once produced the sheets now gathered against it.

The Eco-Museum of Books, this year's Art Maker Festival at Chung Hsing Cultural and Creative Park, closes on Sunday, September 6. Go in the late afternoon, while the indoor rooms are still open and paper, textile, bamboo and concrete can be seen clearly. Stay as the outdoor lights come on.

Outside, Rain Wu's Sea of Book Images lifts blue island forms into the garden. The sheets hang among leaves and paths instead of lying flat or sitting behind glass. The installation leaves air, branches and gaps visible between them.

Lee Kuei-chih has four works across the grounds. In his account of the exhibition, he starts before the book, with plant fibre, water, labour and transformation.

In Stone and Time, a bamboo opening frames Huang Chun-ming's Silvergrass Flower farther into the landscape. You walk through one work while looking toward another. Circle and Square places two bamboo structures beside water and returns the book to the plant material from which paper can be made. Beyond Reading enlarges the bookmark into two upright forms that a person can pass between.

The Breath of Books forms a narrow bamboo lattice room with a seat inside. In daylight, the slats, bindings and concrete beyond remain easy to separate. Later, broken bands of light strengthen against the old mill wall.

At Dye House, by 山廟設計共感製造所, yellow and pale-blue lengths of textile hang over a timber frame lit from within. Earlier workshops added participants' fibre and dye pieces to the installation. Nearby, the team's translucent Book of Time glows among the mill remains.
