Glass foams. Hsinchu gives it room.

Porous white glass, plants reduced to traces, a factory painted in 1942. Hsinchu's Glass Age joins material experiments to the city's working history, across two venues about 140 metres apart.

White glass forms run diagonally over grey concrete. Porous stems rise from rounded discs, one opens into a hollow cup, and long shadows fall to the right.

Follow a glass object into the makers, techniques and city around it.

Yoshiaki Kojiro's pale glass forms rise from smooth discs into rough, porous stems. Heat makes the glass foam, expand and collapse. Rui Sasaki fires plants between glass sheets; ash and bubbles remain after the plants burn away. Air and absence become things to look at.

Start at Windlivehouse's GLASS AGE, then walk to HSINCHU GLASS AGE at the Glass Museum. The museum begins with 林啟燦's Golden Glass Award-winning East Gate and includes this year's 22 award-winning works. The festival also brings in Li Tze-Fan's 1942 Glass Factory. Workers handle long blowing tubes between workbenches and furnaces. These contemporary experiments arrive in a city with a working glass history.

Workers sit and stand among furnaces, long rods and workbenches in a factory painting. Pale smoke rises at left; a worker at right blows through a long tube.
