Take a seat inside the giant at Yuanshan
Reclaimed stadium chairs, a strangely familiar America and flags made with local people: three outdoor works return to Yuanshan’s US military-adviser history.

Sit inside Li Cheng-Liang’s work, then continue through the park towards Taipei Fine Arts Museum.
Rows of red, green and yellow stadium seats line a bright yellow steel enclosure in Expo Park. Li Cheng-Liang made《巨人坐著整個月》with folding chairs recovered from a baseball stadium. You can enter and take a seat, looking back at Yuanshan through the cut-outs in its body.
The three-work MAAGIC programme, curated by Liu Chih-hung, returns to the neighbourhood where the US Military Assistance Advisory Group was based. The group operated in Taiwan from 1951 to 1979; shops and nightlife grew around the lives of its personnel and families. MAAG becomes MAAGIC in the title.
Huang Kuan-Chieh’s《亞美利加諾》photographs places in Taiwan that look uncannily American. One park display sells a fictional dream home in “Americano.” Godkidlla’s《客製化插旗》uses the old stadium flagpoles outside today’s Expo Dome. Parishioners from St Christopher’s Church and Tatung University design students helped make the flags.
The works are outdoors at Yuanshan Expo Park through November 8. Come in daylight for the photographs and chair details. From the Expo Dome area, continue on foot to TFAM; allow about ten minutes. Sakamoto’s exhibition opens October 31, so a reserved museum visit can share the outing from then until November 8.
