Why this order

White shell-like arches sit on the grass. Out on the water, a flock has its own raft. Elena Redaelli imagines shells as future fossils; Takahito Kimura’s bird-shaped wind vanes change direction with wind and tide. These two works make a manageable first visit to a festival spread along the coast.

Plan it

The festival runs October 2–November 1, with programme hours of 10:00–17:00. We suggest one to two hours for the park and nearby boardwalk. Check that day’s tide table before entering the boardwalk; visit the park’s work first if its gates are closed.

Weekends and public holidays: take a TRA train to Sanxingqiao, then the free festival shuttle to Xiangshan Wetland. Walking from the station to the boardwalk entrance is about 1.8 km, 26 minutes.

Elena Redaelli’s Intertidal Carapaxia—Wetland’s future fossils places white perforated arches of different sizes on grass beneath trees. Look closely at the holes and curves, then step back to see how the shells sit in the park.

  2. Stop 2

    Crab boardwalk: Waterbirds’ Parking Lot

Kimura’s Waterbirds’ Parking Lot—PLAY WITH EARTH puts bird-shaped wind vanes on a raft. From the boardwalk, the flock has a formation, but nobody conducts its turns. Check the gate notices before entering: tide or strong wind can close this stop.

The free festival shuttle runs on weekends and public holidays, starting at Sanxingqiao: first departure 10:00, last departure 16:00. Check the wetland stop’s return times; 16:00 is the last departure from the starting station. The diagram also shows separate city sightseeing buses with different routes and hours. For more art, continue along the festival loop to stops such as Haishan harbour.

Route diagram: the cyan festival loop starts at Sanxingqiao station and calls at Jincheng Lake, Xiangshan Wetland, Haishan harbour, Changxing Temple and Xiangshan station.
